Character Name: Corporal “Maladict” Maladicta

Character Series: Discworld

Character Age: Late 50s/early 60s (Looks 19/20)

Background: Born Maladicta, Maladict joined the Borogravian army as a way to escape the monotonous life of a female vampire, bored of wearing stupid dresses, ‘acting crazy all the time’ and bathing in virgins blood. She disguised herself as a man (for women fighting was considered an ‘abomination’ by their rather random and strange God; Nuggan, but then so is dressing like a man, so she couldn’t really win either way) and joined the Tenth Foot Light Infantry. Thanks to her smart attitude and owing to the fact their own corporal did a runner, she was quickly promoted to corporal herself. She managed to keep her gender a secret until the end of the story, where she finally blurted it out, at which point it wasn’t really a surprise anymore, considering it turned out almost everyone in the regiment was a girl. She carries a sword she can’t really use, stating it’s for the protection of others. If they a see a sword, they’re less likely to attack her and so she can avoid simply ripping their heads off.

She has been a member of the Überwald League of Temperance for two years, a group of vampires who have sworn off human blood, and go through a process much like alcoholics anonymous. She transferred her lust for blood into a lust for coffee, which she tended to by carrying about a little portable coffee making machine. When she doesn’t GET her coffee, however, she slowly starts to lose her sanity, having contagious hallucinations of a war in a completely different world involving jungles and ‘flying machines’. These are called flashsides and tend to be unsettling for everyone. If kept from coffee further, she will revert into a true vampire and happily tear out every throat in the place. Not surprisingly, she’d rather be killed before that happens.

Personality: Maladict, like most Discworld vampires, is always suave, smug and has an air of knowing exactly what’s going on at any given time, even if she doesn’t. This means she tends to rub people up the wrong way, and is so often tolerated rather than actually befriended. She’s got a sarcastic streak she can hide incredibly well, which is a good skill in the army when you want to make a snide comment at a higher ranking officer. This tendency of hers was noticed by Sergeant Jackrum, who kept pushing her in order to make her push back, in an effort to make her into a better and much longer lasting soldier.

Due to her life being controlled by her parents, up to the point where she ran away to join the army, she tightly holds onto her independence, seeking help only when she’s absolutely desperate for it and can no longer deal with a situation herself. Such as when her coffee cravings get so bad, she has to ask Polly to help her figure out a way to stop her becoming a danger to the entire regiment.

Mal is the watchful type, too. She was quick to figure out that she wasn’t the only member of the regiment who’d had the same cross-dressing idea that she had. She noticed all the subtle cues and quietly kept them to herself, only occasionally making snarky remarks to Polly about her findings when she thought Polly was close to the truth of the matter. When questioned by Polly as to why she hadn’t turned anyone in, she merely pointed out she was a vampire pretending not to be a vampire, and as such had no place in pointing fingers at anyone. She honestly believes people have a right to live their lives as they wish, and no one should prevent them from doing so.

Despite joining the army, she is very much against the concept of war, numerous times bringing up her concerns to her superiors about how it very much looks like their country was losing the war, and that the common folk within Borgoravia were the ones suffering for it. When told she was ordered to march, not talk, she calmly pointed out she want never ordered not to think.

Maladict is not a fan of anything remotely feminine, and would much rather dress, act and be assumed to be a man than be identified as a woman and have all the problems which come from her chauvinistic country with it. She’s determined not to be forced back into a life of quiet servitude, expecting nothing more than the life a female vampire is expected to lead. After all, she joined the army for a reason.

Irritating and self-centered, Maladict is a huge annoyance for anyone, but despite all her flaws, she’s fiercely loyal and strong willed. You couldn’t find anyone better to be on your side in a crisis. ...So long as she gets her coffee.

Abilities: A note: Though all Discworld vampires are the same species, they do not share the same power and weakness set. Also Black Ribboners like Mal have weakened their more complex abilities (such as an ability to change shape – shown by Sally in Thud!) to the point where they might have lost them completely. Because you never know in Discworld if a vampire can or can’t do something until they’ve done it, I’m only going to list the abilities Mal has shown to do within the novel.

Physical attributes
Enhanced strength: Despite being ‘short and very slim’ Mal has an incredible amount of strength. She can punch people into unconsciousness with one hit, crumble walls and so on.
Enhanced speed: She’s also very, very fast. She can move like a blur.
Enhanced senses: He has a heightened sense of smell (she can even smell death) and can see in darkness. Her hearing is also extremely well honed too. Blood or not, her body is still one of a predator.
Endurance: Vampires are very hard to hurt, and even harder to kill. Even if you DO kill them, nine times out of ten they can be revived without any lasting damage.
Other: She can blend into the shadows to the point where she’s almost invisible. She also sleeps hanging upside down, and prefers it that way.
Mental attributes
Influence: She has an ability to subtly get people to do what she wants. It’s not mind control, rather a gentle influence in the direction she wants. She tends not to use it a lot, because it connects directly with feeding on humans.
Spatial awareness: Vampires have a great sense of space around them, due partly to their enhanced senses, but also because they just know if something is nearby that requires their attention. In times of stress, this can extend to ten miles out from the vampire’s body.
Side-effect: Under times of stress (in Maladict’s case, when she can’t get to coffee) vampires start to lose their mind a little. Her abilities heighten in response to the need to feed on something, especially her influential abilities and spatial awareness, which congeal together to create Flashsides. These are someone else’s flashbacks, which she’s plucked from them and taken as her own. They become very real hallucinations to her, as well as anyone who gets within a couple of feet of her. These things are contagious.

Sample Entry:
So, as I sit here, staring out at my idyllic little garden, admiring this perfect little life I’ve been given, I wonder exactly which God I really hacked off to deserve this. I mean, who thinks this sort of thing is pleasant?

…Well, I’m sure there are people here who do but, hey, if you want to live your life in quiet, moronic bliss, go right ahead. Don’t let me stop you. Don’t forget to water your pansies.
Me? I’m putting on a pair of trousers and finding the nearest exit out of here. I don’t care what anyone says, there’s a way out of everything if you look hard enough.
